Final Link..
Driven by the need to bring
this region into the global optic fiber networks, a group of
telecommunication entities from the Eastern African Region
have banded together to bridge the last remaining coast of
Africa to the digital world. Telecommunications companies from
South Africa , Mozambique , Madagascar , Tanzania , Kenya ,
Uganda , Burundi , Rwanda , Botswana , Somalia , Sudan ,
Mauritius , Zambia , Comores Islands and Djibouti are driving
the project. Other countries in the region are expected to
participate in the EASSy Project. |

The project
has broad-based support from the telecommunications industry,
business, governments, and Non-Governmental Organizations, who
have recognized that this will be an important driver in the
macro economic development of the region. Broadband
connectivity to all parts of Africa is a prerequisite for the
successful proliferation of e-commerce, Internet, and other
broadband applications and projects on the continent. This EASSy Project will enhance
the ICT environment in the region. Only a fiber-optic cable
system such as EASSy can sustain ICT development in
East Africa region.
The Final report of the Detailed
Feasibility Study (DFS) by AXIOM, EGS and Terabit Consulting
concluded
that:
• Traffic study
confirms EASSy concept is commercially viable.
• Decision on EASSy North
anchoring (Port-Sudan, Jeddah , Djibouti or Fujeira) shall be
based on interconnection and other conditions and not traffic.
• Building
Kenya-Uganda-Rwanda-Burundi-Tanzania terrestrial backhaul
shall be ranked first priority.
The initial parties
conducted a Preliminary Feasibility Study on the project and
executed a Memorandum of Understanding, signed at the end of
2003. A detailed technical, commercial and financial study on
the project was conducted as part of the MOU objectives.
It is envisaged that the system will be ready for
Service during first half of year 2010.
